22 Years . . . 22 Things

Today I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary.  This year, we decided, instead of buying each other gifts (thanks to a life in Oola, no need for ties or dress socks anymore), we decided to write “why we love each other, and why we always will “; one for each year of marriage.  For those of you mathematically challenged like me, that is 22 things.  In typical guy style, I am procrastinating until the last minute.  Not because I cannot think of 22 things (I have known this girl since kindergarten so I have lots of material) it is because again, I am a guy, and I am not personally wired to express how I feel in great detail.  My reflex is to write:  1)  Because I love you, 2)  See #1, 3) See #1 . . . you get the point.

If you follow my blog at all, you may know I have had my share of challenges (i.e. completed an ironman, destroyed debt, executed a plan for at 42, etc).  As I stare at this blank page at 10 pm, this may be one of my greatest.  A challenge, not because I cannot rip out 22 nice qualities about my wife, but because I want to be able to put into these words my true feelings and deep gratitude that I feel for this girl I met  at Pinewood Elementary some 38 years ago.

Let’s give it a go. “I love you because . . .

1) . . . you are my biggest fan.  I deeply feel your support in all my crazy adventures.”

2) . . . you would let me pick you up in my Pinto when we were 16 (that’s true love).”

3) . . . you ground me.”

4) . . . you maintain beauty.”

5) . . . you took responsibility as the spiritual leader of the family when I was not.”

6) . . . you take the responsibility of mother actively and seriously.”

7) . . . you laugh at your own jokes.”

8) . . . you listen to me, even when I know you are not interested in the topic.”

9) . . . you are most comfortable in pajama pants and a t-shirt.”

10) . . . you share in my desire to balance and grow.”

11) . . . you view commitment as a verb.”

12) . . . you keep me accountable and engaged in my role as father.”

13) . . . you can make appetizers for a football game you couldn’t care less about”

14) . . . you continually express your appreciation for my role as provider.”

15) . . . you make me feel like the toughest/coolest guy in the room (even though I know I am not).”

16) . . . you talked me into 4 kids.”

17) . . . you stood strong in your position to stay at home with the kids.”

18) . . . you taught me it was not all about me.”

19) . . . you like to fish.”

20) . . . you can run the heat and the AC in the same day.”

21) . . . your favorite flower is a daisy.”

22) . . . you remain authentic to you.”

As uncomfortable as this process is, I share these only because I realize in 22 years of marriage that expressing how we feel about the ones we love is never wasted time; they love hearing it and we need to stay connected to it.  Healthy relationships are so key to a life in Oola.  Don’t assume your loved ones know how you feel about them.  Risk vulnerability to share the importance for the ones you love.  My guess is the gratitude this process produces within you will match the appreciation felt by them.
